This page has instructions to find, download and install the Avenza map phone app as well as geo-referenced maps and associated .kmz files. Please note that Avenza updates the app and so these instructions may change. Let us know!
It may be easiest for you to manage if you first print this page to follow along more easily, or if you ask a companion to read off the instructions on their phone while you work the instructions on your phone. Either way, these options will be easier than toggling back and forth on one phone between the Avenza app and the instructions.
1. Get the Avenza app!
Use your phone to go to the Google Play Store to find and install the Avenza Maps app. You can also get the Avenza app in the iPhone library.
Open the Avenza Maps app on your phone after install (or click the Avenza icon to open the Avenza map app)
Tap GREEN Next
through the slide show or SKIP; also SKIP create an account
2. Get the Avenza map!
On your phone, in the Avenza app.
Tap the ORANGE CIRCLE +
then tap ORANGE CIRCLE Download or import a map
Tap GET A MAP FROM THE STORE
Avenza Maps Requires Access to Your Location Data: Tap AGREE; then Tap ALLOW AVENZA MAPS TO ACCESS THIS DEVICE’S LOCATION WHILE USING THE APP. These options enable GPS navigation
On Find a map, type Butte Falls Oregon Discovery Loop
in the search, select KEYWORD (if you get no result, tap SEARCH FOR ANY MATCHES)
Tap Butte Falls Oregon Discovery Loop
, then the GREEN OVAL FREE button
and the map will download
Continue without an account – Tap YES
Read the description of the map then click the GREEN OVAL Open map
. The map will download, unzip and install. Open the map
Soon you will also be able to search and download the Butte Falls Oregon Historic Walking Map
3. Get the pins!
With the map open on your phone, click the GREEN LAYERS icon
, bottom right of the screen
Tap the ORANGE CIRCLE +
then tap the ORANGE CIRCLE Import layers
On the Import layers screen, scroll to the bottom and tap Web resource and from the web
, enter this short URL https://tinyurl.com/loop-pins and the .kmz file will download to the Avenza Map app on your phone as a linked layer on the Butte Falls Discovery Loop map. Soon you will also be able to search and download the .kmz file for the Butte Falls Oregon Historic Walking Map.
Tap the back arrow at the top left of the Avenza Map screen and within a few moments you will see the full Butte Falls Discovery Loop map with pins marking historic sites, lat/long and elevation for these sites along with descriptions and historic and contemporary photos. There are also affirmation flags to guide you along the route as GPS shows you the way,
4. Use the map!
The Butte Falls Discovery Loop map is easy to use with Avenza Maps. As long as the location feature is turned on in your phone, your phone’s location will show as a blue spotlight as you travel the map.
The orange line is the traditional Butte Falls Discovery Loop route, but with Avenza Maps you can not only locate the original 11 stops along the way, but you can find many more historic locations. Please note that Forest Service roads are not maintained so may have deep potholes.
Tap the Red Pin to identify the site; then swipe up to see more about that location.
Affirmation pins point to a change in direction or confusing intersection
The Purple pins are flags for scenic viewpoints, roads that may be blocked by snow even in July.
Use your fingers to pinch the map to zoom in and zoom out; you can also move the map with a fingertip to show another area.
You can add your own pins and photos to the Avenza Map on your phone. The Avenza Maps website has exceptional documentation and very clear instructions.
